Neil Owen, VP NOTE UK

What Elite Sport Can Teach Us About Manufacturing Excellence

I will be honest with you: I am not the one glued to every match. This has been a remarkable summer of sport – the World Cup building to its climax, the Wimbledon fortnight, a summer of international rugby – but you are far more likely to find me on a golf course, a ski slope, or a boat than in front of the television.

And yet, even watching from a slight remove, I have found it hard not to notice something. The disciplines that separate the very best from the merely good are the same ones I feel every time I stand over a putt or trim a sail. They are also, almost line for line, the disciplines that separate a reliable electronics manufacturing partner from an unreliable one. Whether we are talking about a printed circuit board assembly, a full box build, or complex system integration, the priorities are strikingly familiar.

Here is what this summer has reminded me.

1. It is won long before you start.

The moment of brilliance is the visible tip of months of unseen preparation – the range work before the round, the analysis no camera captures. Manufacturing is no different. The product that ships and simply works is the tip; the real work happens upstream, in design for manufacture, new product introduction, and process validation. Get the preparation right and the performance looks effortless. Skip it, and no amount of effort on the day will save you.

2. The margins are tiny – and they are everything.

Anyone who plays golf knows this in their bones. A clubface a degree or two off, a putt that lips out, and the difference between a good round and a poor one is almost invisible to the naked eye. On a PCBA line, we live in exactly those margins: solder paste deposited to microns, components placed to tolerances you would need a microscope to see, reflow profiles measured degree by degree, every joint checked by automated optical inspection. Precision is not a nice-to-have. It is the whole game.

3. No one crosses the line alone.

Take a racing yacht. It only performs when the whole crew works as one – every manoeuvre trimmed together, every part of the boat pulling in the same direction. A boat is a system, and it is only as fast as its worst-handled moment. This is exactly where box build and system integration come into their own. A superb PCBA is one outstanding crew member, but the finished product only performs when the boards, cables, enclosures, firmware, and mechanics all work as one. System integration is teamwork made physical, and our job is to make sure the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts.

4. Champions do it again. And again.

Anyone can produce one great shot. Consistency – repeating it under pressure, round after round – is what separates the good from the great. In our world, reliability is not one good board; it is consistent first-pass yield across thousands of units, measured in defects per million, repeatable every single time. For the sectors we serve, from MedTech to Security and Defence, that consistency is not a bonus. The product has to perform out in the field, under stress, without fail. Every time.

5. The best read the conditions and adapt.

Ask any sailor or skier: you do not get to choose the weather. The wind shifts, the snow changes, and the skill is reading the conditions and adjusting without losing your shape. We face our own version constantly – component shortages, last-time buys, engineering change orders, supply chains that move under our feet. The art is adapting the plan quickly while never dropping the standard. Agility and quality are not opposites; the best in any field prove it.

The point I keep coming back to.

Even in the most individual of sports, no one really gets there alone. Behind every athlete is a team who did the unseen work – the coaches, the preparation, the people who made the performance possible. The glory belongs to the name on the shirt, but they did not get there by themselves.

That, in the end, is how I think about what we do. Our customers are the names on the shirt. Their brands reach the market, earn the trust, take the applause. We are the crew behind them – preparing meticulously, working to the finest margins, integrating every part into a whole, and delivering the same result every single time.

“Your manufacturing partner” is not just a strapline to me. It is a description of the job. Here is to a brilliant summer of sport – and to every team, seen and unseen, that does the work behind the win.

What parallels do you see between your own field and the sport you follow, or play? I would love to hear them in the comments.

In today’s electronics manufacturing landscape, test development is no longer a final checkpoint – it’s a strategic advantage. As products become more complex and time-to-market pressures intensify, robust testing strategies are essential to ensure reliability, compliance, and scalability.

Designing Robust Test Strategies from Day One

At NOTE UK, we help customers design test strategies and fixtures that validate performance from the earliest stages of development. By integrating Design for Test (DFT) principles into product design, we enable efficient fault detection and reduce costly redesigns (Synopsys). This proactive approach ensures compliance with industry standards such as IPC guidelines and ISO certifications (IPC).

The Challenges Manufacturers Face Today

Why is this a hot topic? Manufacturers face challenges like inconsistent test coverage, scaling from prototype to volume, and managing multiple product variants (Virinco). Without a scalable test architecture, defects can slip through, leading to recalls and reputational damage. Our modular, automated solutions address these issues head-on, ensuring consistent quality across production lines.

Automation and Contingency: Avoiding Bottlenecks

Test is also often overlooked by customers as a potential bottleneck for volume manufacturing. It is therefore important to consider automating this process as much as possible, and build in contingency should equipment need to go out of service for any reason.

Custom Fixtures for High-Reliability Testing

Custom test fixtures play a critical role in this strategy. They provide accurate, repeatable results and protect sensitive components during testing (Aimtron). Whether for in-circuit, functional, or environmental stress testing, NOTE delivers tailored solutions that meet the demands of high-reliability sectors like medical, aerospace, and automotive.

The Future Is Data-Driven Testing

The future of test development is data-driven. By leveraging real-time analytics and AI-powered insights, manufacturers can transform test data into actionable intelligence, improving yield and reducing downtime (WATS).

Partnering with NOTE means gaining a trusted EMS provider committed to precision, scalability, and innovation.
At NOTE, Design for Manufacturing (DfM) is more than a process – it’s a philosophy that drives efficiency and quality. We work closely with customers by applying DfM principles early, to help customers avoid costly redesigns and accelerate their time-to-market.

DfM is a two-way street. It relies on both our manufacturing expertise and seamless collaboration with the design authority (the customer) to identify and implement any necessary changes.

Customers often rely on CAD programs and the design rules set within these external software packages. Whilst this information is driven from the component manufacturing guidelines, the information is combined using standard design principles driven by IPC rules and guidelines. And in some cases, this may induce elements of the design which are not ideally suited for volume production.

Our DfM expertise optimises layouts and component choices, reducing complexity and cost while improving scalability. DfM ensures that every design decision considers manufacturability. Our engineers work closely with customers to create products that are easier, faster, and more cost-effective to produce (Ignitec).

Why is this important? Studies show that up to 70% of product cost is determined during the design phase, making early DfM integration critical for competitive advantage (CLEVR).

Our approach also supports compliance with industry standards and ensures smooth transitions from prototype to volume manufacturing. By reducing complexity and improving scalability, NOTE helps customers deliver reliable products that meet market demands without compromising quality.

Ready to optimise your design for cost and scalability?
