HomePCBA Manufacturing

PCBA manufacturing – the assembly of electronic components onto a bare printed circuit board to create a finished, functional printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) – sits at the heart of what NOTE UK does. As a contract electronics manufacturer with six UK sites and the backing of the wider NOTE Group across Northern Europe and Asia, we build printed circuit board assemblies from prototype and new product introduction (NPI) right through to volume production – all under one manufacturing partner.

Whether you need a handful of boards to prove a design or a scalable route to high-volume output, our surface-mount (SMT), through-hole and mixed-technology assembly lines, in-line inspection and electrical test capabilities deliver PCBAs built to your specification and quality requirements. From first article to full production, NOTE UK is Your Manufacturing Partner.

Our SMT lines place components directly onto the board surface for high-density, high-speed, automated assembly. We handle fine-pitch and miniature components, including BGA, QFN and other area-array packages, supported by solder paste inspection and closed-loop process control for consistent, repeatable placement.

For connectors, high-stress parts and components that demand a stronger mechanical bond, we provide through-hole assembly – hand, wave and selective soldering. Many assemblies combine both technologies, and our mixed-technology capability builds SMT and through-hole on the same board within a single controlled process.

Every assembly is verified through in-line and post-assembly inspection. We use automated optical inspection (AOI), solder paste inspection (SPI) and X-ray inspection to check hidden joints beneath area-array packages such as BGAs – catching defects early and building quality in rather than testing it in.

We offer a range of electrical test options – in-circuit test (ICT), flying probe test and functional test – selected to suit your product, volume and reliability requirements. Because test strategy is agreed at NPI, coverage is built in from the outset, well before your first production build.

Where assemblies operate in demanding and harsh environments, we apply conformal coating and related protection processes to guard against moisture, dust, temperature and contamination – extending the working life and reliability of the finished PCBA.

From a single prototype and first-article build through to full new product introduction (NPI), we help you move a design into reliable production. Our design for manufacture (DFM) review optimises a design for yield, testability and cost before volume ramp, reducing risk and time to market.

NOTE UK builds low-volume, high-mix batches and higher-volume production on the same partner relationship. As demand scales, volume manufacturing can transfer seamlessly to NOTE Group facilities across Northern Europe and Asia – giving you UK proximity for development and a proven route to cost-effective volume.

Our turnkey PCBA service manages component procurement, supply chain and obsolescence alongside assembly, inspection and test – so you receive fully built, tested assemblies from a single point of accountability. We also support consigned and part-consigned models where you prefer to supply components.

Full build traceability supports the quality and compliance expectations of regulated and safety-critical sectors, giving you a clear record from incoming components through to the finished assembly. Should a query ever arise, that record lets us trace materials, processes and test results quickly and with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

PCBA manufacturing is the process of assembling electronic components onto a bare printed circuit board (PCB) to produce a finished, functional printed circuit board assembly (PCBA). It typically combines surface-mount (SMT) and through-hole assembly, followed by inspection and electrical test.

A PCB is the bare board with copper tracks and no components. A PCBA is that board once electronic components have been soldered onto it, making it a working assembly. In short: the PCB is the canvas, the PCBA is the finished circuit.

SMT (surface-mount technology) places components directly onto the board surface and suits high-density, high-speed, automated assembly. Through-hole assembly inserts component leads through drilled holes for a stronger mechanical bond, ideal for connectors and high-stress parts. Many assemblies use both — known as mixed-technology.
